A Remarkable Turtle Recovery

On the beaches of Boa Vista in Cabo Verde, loggerhead turtles are making a remarkable comeback. A study found an 80-fold increase in nesting between 1998 and 2024, following decades of habitat protection, anti-poaching efforts, hatchery programmes and community-led conservation. While the recovery offers hope, researchers stress that continued monitoring and protection is essential as climate change and coastal development continue to threaten nesting sites.
