The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE) consists of Department of Arctic and Marine Biology, Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NFH) and School of Business and Economics.

The main task of BFE is to conduct teaching and research dissemination at a high national and international level within all relevant fields. Prioritized research areas are aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, climate, life in the arctic, marine bioprospecting, fish health, seafood products, business and macroeconomics, resources and environment, markets and management of marine resources. The interdisciplinary profile of the faculty provides good opportunity to develop research projects involving several research groups at the faculty according to its strategy.

The position

At The Department of Arctic and Marine Biology (AMB) theres is an vacant position as Associate professor within animal physiology – Comparative Molecular Chronobiology. The position is affiliated with the research group Arctic Chronobiology and Physiology.

The Department of Arctic and Marine Biology (AMB) hincludes 6 research groups distributed across three buildings. Research and teaching at AMB has a broad span, from molecular mechanisms at cellular/subcellular levels via studies of adaptations at the organismal level, to ecological interactions in aquatic and terrestrial environments. The institute is an exciting and cutting-edge academic and research unit in biology that addresses professional challenges in basic research, industrial and administrative-oriented research with a strong focus on North. The Institute has extensive national and international research collaboration including regional institutions like Framsenteret, IMR and NIBIO.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time, after receiving the offer.

The position’s  field of research or work

The position shall contribute to strengthening the Department’s research and education in animal physiology, with particular focus on comparative molecular chronobiology. You will become an active and integral member of the Arctic Chronobiology and Physiology (ACP) research group and you will play a central role in establishing new research initiatives, including the establishment of ACP as an   international centre of excellence for research into seasonal timekeeping. You will, moreover, be expected to contribute to development of research programmes, recruitment and mentoring of early stage/experienced researchers and public outreach activities essential for the international profile of UiT and ACP.

You will become an active participant in the team of AMB faculty members responsible for teaching delivery on all levels, curriculum development and student supervision. More generally, you will be expected to contribute to development and delivery of teaching programmes run by AMB for bachelor and masters students. In particular, you will lead teaching on courses in chronobiology and arctic animal physiology and will contribute to the development of pedagogic approaches in these topics and to good teaching practices within AMB’s and BFE’s study programs. AMB expect you to be willing to engage yourself in the ongoing development of your discipline and the university as a whole.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • Norwegian doctoral degree in animal physiology or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. Or competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality.
  • Strong research and academic competence in vertebrate physiology.
  • High expertise in comparative molecular chronobiology.
  • A successful track record of research into biological timekeeping mechanisms in species relevant for life in northern Norway and the Arctic.
  • Documented basic educational competence (can be obtained – read more below).
  • Oral and written communication skills in Norwegian, or in one of the Scandinavian languages ​​at B2 level, as well as full command of oral and written English communication. Provision is made for Norwegian skills to be acquired within three years from the date of employment.
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Proven success in securing external research funding on projects in relevant research areas.
  • A track record of teaching animal physiology and / or chronobiology at bachelor´s or master´s level.

Pedagogical basic competence

All applicants for teaching and research positions shall document their pedagogical competence.  You must have acquired basic competence for teaching and supervision at higher education level. This includes basic skills in planning, conducting, evaluating and developing teaching and guidance.

Documentation requirement for pedagogical basic competence

  • a) Applicants who have completed education or courses designed to provide teaching competence for teaching at universities and colleges, equivalent to a minimum of 200 hours, must attach diploma and curriculum for the completed course.
  • b) Other applicants shall describe, assess and document their competence as a teacher and supervisor. The skills must be documented in the form of a teaching portfolio.

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee’s mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants’ qualifications on the basis of the written material presented by the applicants, and the description draw up for the position. The application must include:

  • Published or unpublished work that you wish to include as part of the assessment.

The remuneration for Associate Professor is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1011. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.  As a state employee, you have one of the best pension schemes availiable. As an employee you will become member of the National Insurance Scheme which also include health care services. The allocation of working hours is flexible and allocated on a case-by-case basis. In general, Associate Professors will spend an equal amount of time on teaching versus research and development work after time spent on other duties has been deducted. As a norm, the time resources spent on administrative duties constitutes 5 % for academic staff.
