The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE) consists of Department of Arctic and Marine Biology, Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NFH) and School of Business and Economics.

The main task of BFE is to conduct teaching and research dissemination at a high national and international level within all relevant fields. Prioritized research areas are aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, climate, life in the arctic, marine bioprospecting, fish health, seafood products, business and macroeconomics, resources and environment, markets and management of marine resources. The interdisciplinary profile of the faculty provides good opportunity to develop research projects involving several research groups at the faculty according to its strategy.

The position

A Research position in the management of living marine resources, including climate adaptation and mitigation in fisheries and aquaculture, is available at the Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NCFS). The position is affiliated with the research group BRIDGE. The positions funding and tasks covers a periode of four years with the potential for an extended funding period. The position is considered permanent, but any continuation is dependent on external funding or the need for employment in another similar position. The projects will start in May 2025.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

NCFS is a part of The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE) and undertakes research and research-based teaching of high national and international quality in an interdisciplinary environment. Research at the Norwegian University of Fisheries takes place in close collaboration with the faculty and university research environments, as well as national and international partners. Research activity is provisionally organized into the groups of: Living Marine Resources, Sea Food Science, Fish Immunology and Vaccinology, Aquaculture, Genetics, Marine Drug Discovery, Resource Management, Marine Management and Resource Economics.

The position’s field of research

The researcher will become a member of a team that will work with Horizon Europe projects on human activities in marine and coastal areas. The researcher’s focus will be on developing solutions for climate adaptation and mitigation in fisheries (MeCCAM) and aquaculture (OCCAM) through several case studies in Europe. These new projects build on the outcomes from the Horizon 2020 research and innovation actions ClimeFish and CERES. The projects are likely to start in May 2025.

OCCAM will develop, deploy, test, and evaluate innovative solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation in the aquaculture sector, and deliver recommendations and scalable, exploitable, and replicable solutions ready for use for a wide variety of aquaculture supply chains.

MeCCAM will develop, recommend, and contribute to the implementation of climate mitigation and adaptation solutions to reduce environmental impact and increase the resilience and sustainability of the European fisheries sector. Here the researcher will mainly contribute to developing adaptation solutions in the fisheries. This includes climate mitigation and adaptation plans and recommendations, and a roadmap to enhance alignment with the EU sustainability reporting framework.

Stakeholder involvement is crucial in both projects, and the researcher will contribute to planning and facilitating stakeholder interactions, document their feedback with and assessment of benefits and limitations of the solutions developed.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • A Norwegian doctoral degree in environmental science/management, marine science/management, sustainability studies, sociology, political science, geography, bio economics or another field with clear relevance for the work areas described above. Or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree, or competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality. A PhD degree is required before commencement in the position. If you are near completion of your PhD degree, you may still apply. In this case you need to submit a draft version of the PhD thesis and attach a statement from your supervisor or institution indicating when the PhD is completed.
  • Educational and/or work experience from a marine/aquatic context.
  • Strong scientific writing skills (this will primarily be assessed in terms of publications in English).
  • Qualitative research skills (e.g. project design and leadership experience; experience with stakeholder engagement; semi-structured interviews or the use of focus groups).
  • Good communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate good management skills (self-management, group/project management).
  • Documented fluency of English language (learn more).

Personal qualifications and suitability will be emphasized. The candidate’s personal qualifications should include excellent interpersonal skills. Important aspects of this include the ability to, and the interest in, working as a member of a research team.

Additional desirable qualifications:

  • PhD thesis with specialization within or with relevance for climate change, sustainability, or marine governance, especially relating to the indicated research areas.
  • Quantitative research skills.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary research and/or projects.
  • Experience with, and motivation for, working with stakeholders.
  • Experience from working with/in the fisheries and/or aquaculture industry.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a research team.
  • Knowledge of European marine governance frameworks.
  • Knowledge of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, especially in relation to marine fisheries and aquaculture.
  • Advanced digital skills, e.g. experience with GiS, programming, Decision support tools, N-Vivo or other software supporting qualitative and quantitative research.
  • Competence in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language (learn more).

The remuneration for the research position is in accordance with the State salary code 1109. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted. UiT pays directly to the pension fund on top of the salary  – in 2023 this rate is 9 %. The allocation of working hours is flexible and allocated on a case-by-case basis. In a research position you will spend most of the time on research and development work. As a norm, the time resources spent on administrative duties constitutes 5 % for academic staff.
