Global mangrove forests are no longer in net decline, according to a new study analysing four decades of satellite data. Researchers found that natural regeneration, conservation efforts and expansion into newly formed coastal areas have largely offset historical losses. The findings offer rare good news for one of the world’s most valuable coastal ecosystems. Mangroves play a vital role in protecting shorelines, supporting marine life and storing climate-warming carbon.
