Cold Blob in the Ocean

A patch of unusually cold water in the North Atlantic, known as the “cold blob,” may be a sign that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is weakening. New research suggests the cooling is driven by reduced ocean heat transport rather than atmospheric changes, raising concerns that this vital current system could be approaching a climate tipping point with impacts on weather, sea levels and ecosystems.
