Wilder Seas: A Blueprint for Ocean Recovery

A new report from Rewilding Britain and the Marine Conservation Society highlights the urgent need to protect and rewild the UK’s marine environment, which is under mounting pressure from overexploitation, pollution and climate change. Once rich and thriving, marine ecosystems are now collapsing—putting coastal communities, marine industries and climate resilience at risk. Despite the UK seabed’s potential to sequester nearly three times more carbon annually than the nation’s forests, it remains exposed to damaging practices. The report sets out eight practical, community-focused recommendations to reverse this decline and restore ocean health. Drawing on real-life examples of marine rewilding from around the UK, it offers a hopeful and achievable path forward. Key actions include streamlining marine licensing for local restoration projects, banning harmful ‘forever chemicals’, protecting vital blue carbon habitats and launching a national Ocean Literacy Action Plan.
