Hawai’i Green Tax to Fund Climate Protection

Hawaii has passed ground breaking legislation, adding a “green fee” to its existing short‑term lodging tax to combat climate change. Effective January 2026 for hotels and rentals, with a prorated tax on cruise ship passengers starting July 2026, the state anticipates raising about $100 million annually. Funds will support beach restoration, wildfire prevention, storm resilience and infrastructure improvements.
