The Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering at NTNU in Ålesund has a vacancy for a position as Associate Professor/Professor in Operational Leadership and organization, with a particular focus on leadership in maritime operations.

About the position:

NTNU Ålesund plays a central role in education and research on maritime operations, with a strong emphasis on the professional practitioner in an innovative sociotechnical maritime environment. We are now looking to strengthen our competence in operative leadership in maritime organizations. Our view on operational leadership is not the managerial and strategic view on leadership, but rather the leadership involved in understanding how the success of operations depends on understanding complex work processes and how advanced technology and rapidly changing environments will affect organizations, teams and individual performance.

This position is part of our master’s program in Operational Maritime Leadership, and we are seeking a candidate who can develop teaching courses and research projects with a practice-oriented focus on leading professional work within an organizational context. You will join an interdisciplinary environment focused on both technological and operational leadership challenges and contribute to educating future leaders in the maritime industry.

Your immediate leader is Head of the department.

Duties of the position

  • Responsibility for the teaching portfolio on risk and crisis management at the master in Operational Maritime Management
  • Supervision of students at bachelor- and master level in our study programs
  • Contributing to initiating a research portfolio on operational maritime risk management
  • Research and publication within relevant fields for the position
  • Contribute into and build industry networks
  • Dissemination
  • Other relevant administrative tasks

Required qualifications

You must have the qualifications required for the position of professor/associate professor in fields related to operational leadership, as outlined in the NTNUs guidelines for academic positions.

  • A PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in operational leadership, organization or related fields
  • Experience from maritime operations and/or extensive research on maritime operations
  • Experience combining the interaction between human, technology, and organization (HTO)
  • Innovation and collaboration between academia and industry
  • Documented research and experience within the field
  • Ability to obtain security clearance for participation in security and emergency preparedness-related projects
  • Teaching experience in higher education
  • Strong oral and written English skills
  • For non-Scandinavian speakers: formal documentation of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, CAE/CPE)
  • Uniped qualification

Language requirements:

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level B2 of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Pedagogical requirements:

You must document relevant teaching and supervision competence at the university level. Completed and approved university pedagogy course. A teaching portfolio must be included with the application.

The offer

Salary and conditions

For the position as an Associate Professor (code 1011) you will be compensated according to competitive terms in line with similar positions at the department, and depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of the salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

You are encouraged to use the Universities Norway’s NOR-CAM toolbox as a guide for  documentation of your competence.

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration, and an open scientific practice will be recognized.

NTNU is obliged by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Fransisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA and The obligations in the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment ( CoARA) on responsible assessment of research and recognition of a  wider range of academic contributions to science and society. This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.

Your application will be considered by an expert committee. Candidates of interest will be invited to an interview, and to deliver a trial teaching session.

Salary and conditions

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800 per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.

The employment period is 3 years, with a preferred startup as early in 2026 as possible. The duration of the employment period can be extended upon mutual agreement on teaching duties.

For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in Engineering within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.

For the necessary academic and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control (legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services). Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, are considered to bein conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to be employed.
