A Dutch court has ruled that bottom trawling in the Dogger Bank cannot continue without permits and environmental assessments. The court found that the Dutch government’s blanket exemption for trawl fishing in the protected Natura 2000 area was contrary to nature protection legislation. The ruling could enforce governments’ legal responsibility to regulate bottom trawling in marine protected areas across Europe.
