Coral reef managers are increasingly turning to restoration as a strategy to combat reef degradation and promote reef recovery. Different techniques are being pioneered across the globe, with new resources, science, and best practices being developed rapidly in this fast-moving field.
The Reef Resilience Network, in partnership with the Coral Restoration Consortium, is pleased to announce that enrollment is now open for the five-week mentored version of the recently updated Coral Reef Restoration Online Course. The mentored course will be held from September 29 – October 31, 2025. The online lessons provide coral reef managers and practitioners with best practice guidance for common coral reef restoration techniques. The mentored course will include live webinars and discussion forums with global restoration experts, along with exclusive podcast episodes and videos highlighting stories from the field. The live webinars during the mentored course will be offered in English, but the online lessons can be taken in English, Arabic, French, or Spanish. The course takes about 20 hours to complete, including completing the lessons and participating in the webinars and discussion forums.
The course features seven lessons:
- Introduction to Coral Reef Restoration and Project Planning
- Coral Propagation and Field-based Coral Nurseries
- Land-based Coral Nurseries
- Larval-based Coral Propagation
- Restoring Physical Reef Structure
- Rapid Response and Emergency Coral Reef Restoration
- Monitoring for Coral Reef Restoration
Important Dates
- September 3 – 26: Enrollment for the course is open. Visit the Course Pre-work tab.
- Week of September 29: Course begins with an introduction webinar. Complete Lesson 1 and participate in the forum discussions with mentors and other participants.
- Week of October 6: Complete Lessons 2 and 3 and participate in the forum discussions with mentors and other participants.
- Week of October 13: Live webinar on larval-based coral propagation techniques with experts. Complete Lesson 4 and participate in the forum discussions with mentors and other participants.
- Week of October 20: Complete Lessons 5 and 6 and participate in the forum discussions with mentors and other participants.
- Week of October 27: Live webinar on monitoring for coral reef restoration with experts. Complete Lesson 7 and participate in the forum discussions with mentors and other participants. Complete the course survey and download your certificate of completion.
