Marine protection took centre stage at last week’s UN Ocean Conference (UNOC) in Nice, with key breakthroughs across several fronts. Nineteen more countries ratified the UN High Seas Treaty, bringing the total to 50. New or expanded Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) were announced, and support for a deep-sea mining moratorium rose to 37 countries. Renewed financial commitments gave hope for coral reef conservation, while over 95 nations called for progress on a stalled Global Plastic Treaty.
