The aim is to enhance protection of coastal waters following the collapse of the Fundão dam in 2015, which saw a wave of sludge pour into the river and weaken the waves at the mouth of the waterway. The new law requires Linhares to protect the natural flow of the river and to guard it from pollution. It must also safeguard connected waters.
