2025 UN Ocean Conference -Global Online Stakeholder Consultation – Deadline 30 August 2024

Background

The 2025 UN Ocean Conference will be held in Nice, France from 9 – 13 June 2025. The theme of this high-level conference is “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean”. The Conference aims to support further and urgent action to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development and identify further ways and means to support the implementation of SDG 14.

Ocean Action Panels 

The Conference will include 10 Ocean Action Panels, which shall be collaborative and multi-stakeholder in nature and will focus on commitments and actions to support the implementation of Goal 14. Following the Preparatory Meeting on 2 July 2024, the Permanent Representatives of Costa Rica and France issued a letter with the final themes of the Ocean Action Panels: 

  • Fostering sustainable fisheries management including supporting small-scale fishers.
  • Conserving, sustainably managing, and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems including deep-sea ecosystems.
  • Promoting and supporting all forms of cooperation, especially at the regional and subregional level.
  • Preventing and significantly reducing marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities.
  • Leveraging ocean, climate, and biodiversity interlinkages.
  • Advancing sustainable ocean-based economies, sustainable maritime transport, and coastal community resilience leaving no one behind.
  • Promoting the role of sustainable food from the ocean for poverty eradication and food security.
  • Increasing ocean-related scientific cooperation, knowledge, capacity building, marine technology, and education to strengthen the science-policy interface for ocean health.
  • Enhancing the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and their resources by implementing international law as reflected in the UNCLOS.
  • Mobilizing finance for ocean actions in support of SDG 14.

Global Online Stakeholder Consultation

In preparation for the 2025 UN Ocean Conference Conference, the Secretary-General of the Conference will prepare, in consultation with the co-hosts of the Conference, concept papers for each of the themes of the Ocean Action panels.

Non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, academic institutions, the scientific community, the private sector, philanthropic organizations, Indigenous Peoples and local communities and other actors are invited to contribute substantive inputs to the concept papers of the Ocean Action Panels through this global online stakeholder consultation.

Contributions will be shared broadly and will be available online on the Conference’s website. A summary, including outcomes of the consultation and key inputs/messages, will be prepared by DESA and made publicly available.
