Weather balloon observations (so-called radiosoundings) are the only source of vertical in-situ profiles of temperature, humidity, and wind from the surface to the stratosphere. Almost all of the ca. 800 active radiosonde stations worldwide are located onshore whereas very view soundings are received from the data sparse ocean regions. Shipboard radiosoundings have the capability to fill the data gap. Only few countries engage in routine ASAP (Automated Shipboard Aerological Programme) operations. This webinar is focused on the European ASAP activities in the North Atlantic and gives an introduction into the technique and operation of radiosoundings on board merchant vessels in regular service.
