Applications are being accepted for a PostDoctoral Fellow position in the School of Ocean Science and Engineering, the University of Southern Mississippi beginning September 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The focus of the research is to derive the size distribution of particles by a combination of direct measurement and optical inversion as a part of NASA EXPORTS project. The work may include, but is not necessarily limited to:

  1. Conduct and analyze laboratory and field measurements to determine the volume scattering functions;
  2. Develop inversion algorithms that utilize polarization information in particle scattering;
  3. Analyze particle flux from surface to twilight zone.

Minimum: Ph. D. degree in the field of marine science, remote sensing, or a closely related quantitative discipline. Strong programming skills.

Preferred: The successful candidate should demonstrate excellence in scholar productivity in conducting and interpreting field- and/or lab-based optical measurements, ocean color remote sensing, or inter-disciplinary science. The successful candidate is expected to make significant improvement in interpreting volume scattering function measurements collected in the field to advance the knowledge in hydrological optics and to derive biogeochemical stocks in aquatic environment.

This is full time, 12-month position, with a funding period of 3 years (pending annual review and funding availability). Annual salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position also qualifies for a full benefit package. Interested candidates may address questions regarding the position to Dr. Xiaodong Zhang (xiaodong.zhang@usm.edu) but applications must be submitted through the USM’s Jobs link, https://usm.csod.com/ats/careersite/JobDetails.aspx?id=857&site=1. Review of applications will begin as soon as the applications are received.
