Lewis & Clark College, a private liberal arts college with about 2,000 undergraduates, invites applications for an adjunct professorship in the Environmental Studies Program beginning Fall 2019. The successful candidate will deliver a sophomore-level Oceanography course that consists of three weekly one-hour lectures and a weekly 3-hour laboratory session (see schedule and course description below). Ph.D. or ABD in Atmospheric, Ocean, Climate Science or a related field required at the time of appointment. Excellent classroom teaching and laboratory instruction at an undergraduate institution is essential. The course material is somewhat flexible, such that the instructor can emphasize their area(s) of expertise within the field of Oceanography. The class size is typically around 10 students.

Course title: Issues in Oceanography
Course description: Exploration of the geological, chemical, and physical dynamics of the global oceans, including implications of ocean policy. Topics include geology of the sea floor, coastal erosion, waves, tides, storm surge, sea-level rise, ocean circulation, composition of seawater, biogeochemical cycles and ocean acidification. The course will be organized around compelling issues in oceanography that may include deep-ocean mining, coastal development, tsunami hazards, ocean pollution, or others. Weekly labs provide hands-on experience with course concepts. Lecture and lab.
Course schedule: Sept. 4th ? Dec 11th
Lectures MW 3-4:30pm. Labs Friday 2-5pm.
Final exam Tuesday Dec. 17th, 1-4pm
Labs cancelled Friday 10/11 (fall break) and 11/29 (thanksgiving).
Two of the laboratory sessions are typically replaced with two (weekend) field trips, typically 1) to the Columbia estuary to examine wave and tidal processes and 2) to Oregon beaches to examine beach and sediment processes.
