Position Objective
MCP is looking for a Junior Science officer to train volunteers to conduct our MPA monitoring program and teach recreational SCUBA courses during high periods. Most of your time will be dedicated to conservation work but you must also be a confident SCUBA instructor. This position is ideal for early-career applicants interested in gaining more field experience in marine ecology, biology and conservation. You will be expected to play a major part in leading MCP?s volunteer-based monitoring program.
Mentored by senior staff, you will have the opportunity to learn and soon be expected to teach and lead volunteers in our continuous marine monitoring program and daily conservation activities. You will learn the ins and outs of MCP and how we ensure that our conservation objectives are met without jeopardising high data quality requirements and rigorous safety standards. This will include conducting in-water training of volunteers and interpreting data collected by volunteers. You will be assisted by interns and be expected to take part in their daily management with senior staff. You are expected to become the friendly face of our monitoring program, enabling it to run smoothly while ensuring no volunteer is left behind.
This position requires excellent observational, communication and active listening skills, and to lead groups with a positive attitude in a dynamic environment. It entails flexibility of organisation, a rigorous mind and a contagious passion for the ocean. Expect most days to be spent in the water, leading & managing volunteers while fulfilling MCP?s conservation duties.
Roles and Responsibilities:
?  Inspire: Be a fresh, patient and encouraging person that will inspire volunteers to fall in love with marine conservation & exceed themselves collecting MPA monitoring data even in the rain (although most days are sunny).
?  Teach Monitoring: Supported by senior staff and interns, train volunteers to conduct our monitoring program. This includes leading classroom presentations and in water lessons on the identification of target substrates, fish and invertebrates, survey techniques and data entry.
?  Lead and Supervise: Develop a conservation mindset in volunteers. Enable the smooth running of the program and daily activities on base by ensuring that every volunteer knows what they need to do at all times.
?  Jump in, wherever needed: Be prepared to support the conservation goals of MCP by assisting with everything from data collection to mangrove planting. Further to our daily activities, be prepared to perform data collection accuracy checks, data input management, seagrass monitoring, expeditions and much more.
?  Teach SCUBA Courses: Ease the load on the instructor teams by teaching an average of 1 to 2 SCUBA courses per month when courses number are high.
?  Socialise: Take an active part in the social activities and duties at base. Lead afternoon activities, community events and contribute to communication tools (social media and blogs).

?    You are an extraverted person, comfortable taking a leadership role and have the people skills to manage volunteers and interns at dive sites and on base.
?    You are willing to learn our monitoring methodology and you will exhibit the highest regards to our safety standards and procedures without compromising the scientific validity of our systems.
?    You are a team-player and are willing to work collaboratively with staff and interns.
?    You are conservation oriented and will share your ideals with staff and volunteers through a role model stance.
?    You are comfortable living in a rural environment, surrounded by nature.
Requirements
?    A degree in Marine Science, Fisheries, Conservation, or other related fields and have the desire to pursue a career in conservation.
?    Demonstrated knowledge and skills in marine monitoring methods and management of ecological data.
?    Be an active status PADI Scuba Instructor status.
?    Must be fluent in English and confident to teach international students.
?    Experience in teaching and public speaking.
?    Need to be comfortable sharing accommodation with a male colleague.
?    You are a social butterfly, willing to contribute to the social life at base.
?    Can demonstrate skills in team management.
?    Previous experience in a conservation NGO.
?    Able to commit to a year program.
?    Have a valid and clean driving license.
?    Can bring a personal laptop for general tasks and data entry.
?    Have valid health insurance.
Desired
?  Have an underwater camera and able to shoot, process and edit underwater images.
?  Experience in social media content creation.
?  Comfortable driving manual transmission vehicles.
