Title:
Earth Observations of Aquatic Systems for Human Health

Description:
Several million cases of water-related disease are reported globally each year from water-borne or vector-borne pathogens, Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), and locally-discharged pollutants (such as anti-biotics, radioactive compounds and heavy metals). A large number of cases could be avoided through improved access to clean drinking water, sanitation, identification of pollutant sources, and more cases could be prevented by providing robust forecasts of disease outbreaks and health risks. In this session, we invite contributions that highlight the value of remote sensing (satellite, aircraft or drone based) to address human-health problems associated with aquatic environmental conditions and climate variations, through surveillance and prevention of water-related diseases (for example, but not limited to, cholera, dengue, malaria and zika), HABs monitoring, tracking of pollutants, and development of early-warning systems.
