Background

The Helmholtz-Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) is a new institute on interdisciplinary marine biodiversity research, established on the campus of the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg. It joins the scientific profiles of Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) Oldenburg and the Alfred Wegener Institute – Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research Bremerhaven (AWI).

Overview

This call for postdoctoral positions encourages proposals situated within and across areas of our institutional expertise: biodiversity change, ecosystem functions and conservation and management to understand our Anthropocene oceans. Central to the call is research that employs networks, flows and systems as concepts (and realities) that allow for linkages between environmental problems and society to be explored.
Projects might include: understanding complex marine systems for effective management; exploring flows of information for better science communication; evaluating (actor)network frameworks for grasping biodiversity change and societal resilience; grasping how species under need of management, move or disperse, or projects that encompass cross-boundary areas such as urban oceans, estuary zones, and waste streams, or cross-boundary topics such as shifting baselines, marine environmental target formation, bioinvasion or ocean acoustics. This list is not exhaustive.
These positions contribute to the mission of HIFMB and the Helmholtz program POF IV, by understanding the functional role of biodiversity in marine systems and its consequences for societies.

Requirements

Formal requirements are an excellent PhD (finalized latest at Dec 31, 2021) in marine sciences (natural, social or interdisciplinary) or related fields, and an encouraging scientific track record commensurate to career stage (in publications, conference contributions, prices, etc.).

Applications should include a motivation letter (maximum 3 pages) and your academic CV with a list of the most important publications (please use attached template). In your motivation letter, you should  explain your suitability for a postdoc position under the given theme and set out an overview of how you would pursue research under this call. This should include the background/existing knowledge in your field, the research question(s) you envisage and methods related to your particular topic.

Please also describe how your research topic is linked to the HIFMB research areas and HIFMB’s scientific mission and how the questions may contribute to achieving the objectives of Helmholtz research program POF IV, esp. chapter 6.1). Please also describe if you intend to connect your research to external researchers outside HIFMB/ AWI and UOL.
