Job description

Two positions as Postdoctoral Research Fellows are available at the Section for Meteorology and Oceanography (“MetOs”) within the Department of Geosciences, with a preferred starting date of 01.11.2020. The appointments are full-time positions and are made for a period of up to three years.

No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Fellow period at the University of Oslo.

Both postdocs will work on a project focused on understanding the effects of rough bottom topography on oceanic flows, including on the vertical structure of time-varying currents, the stability of currents and planetary waves, and the dynamics of bottom-intensifed waves. The project is being done in collaboration with scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography of the University of California San Diego, at Florida State University and at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP).

Both positions will be based in Oslo. The post-doc in Fellowship 1 (3 years) will in addition spend one month per year at Scripps, focusing on theoretical aspects of the fluid-solid interactions. The post-doc in Fellowship 2 (3 years) will spend one month per year at Florida State, analyzing output from a state-of-the-art numerical simulation of the North Atlantic. The post-docs will also work with marine geologists, one in Oslo and the second in Paris.

Thus both positions offer unique networking opportunities, requiring close collaboration with groups in the US, Norway and France. In addition to the extended visits to the partner institutions, there will be ample opportunities to attend international conferences. Oslo offers many cultural and natural attractions to enjoy as well.

Beyond the specifics given above, the two fellows are expected to become active and engaged members of the department in general, and the MetOs community in particular. MetOs has a dynamic and growing group of PhD students and post-docs with whom the post-docs can interact.

The main purpose of postdoctoral fellowships is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.
