 Project main objective: To study seasonal changes in environmental gradients, further modified
by the anthropogenic impacts, influence on benthic communities, their trophic relations and
functioning, and related implications for C, N, P fluxes, in the shallow southern Baltic Sea

Tasks description:
PhD student is expected to work within the Polish National Science Centre funded project: Coastal
Ecosystem functioning under different anthropogenic pressure – linking Benthic communities And
biogeochemical Cycling in the southern Baltic Sea (COmEBACk), in collaboration with the Laboratory of
Marine Environmental Sciences (LEMAR, France).
The successful candidate is expected to:
– take part in cruises and field work
– perform ex situ experiments including simultaneous measurements of sediment oxygen demand,
nutrient fluxes at the sediment-water interface, and bioturbation processes
– perform ecological (benthic meio- and macrofauna community structure) and biogeochemical
analysis on bulk sediments and solutes (organic matter, nutrients and carbon)
– analyze ecological and biogeochemical data, including use of statistics
– work with other team members involved in the project
– present results of work during seminars and scientific conferences
– write high quality scientific articles as part of PhD thesis.

Requirements:
– To be considered for this position, the applicant should possess a master degree in the area of
oceanography, marine ecology, biology and biogeochemistry or related disciplines.
– The candidate should have knowledge on the ecology of benthic organisms and/or marine biogeochemical
processes including carbon and nutrient cycling.
– The candidate should be able to work in an interdisciplinary team, willing to solve scientific problems and
to face new challenges.
– Good verbal and writing skills in English are required.
– Experience in field and sea work is welcome but not necessary.
– Experience in ecological and chemistry laboratory work including benthic fauna community analysis,
carbon and nutrients analysis will be additionally valued.
