2 fully funded PhD opportunities

I wanted to draw your attention to 2 fully funded (fees, stipend, and research budget) PhD opportunities. These are through the ENVISION Doctoral Training Program (http://www.envision-dtp.org/), and both linked between Lancaster University and Bangor University, UK. The full funding is available to UK applicants, or EU applicants resident in UK for past 3 years.

1)      Functional changes in coral reef marine protected areas – http://www.envision-dtp.org/portal/projects/002893/functional-changes-in-coral-reef-marine-protected-areas. This project will use a functional trait approach to understand changes in benthic and fish assemblages in MPAs through time, in comparison to wilderness areas, and in the face of disturbance. The project will include use of existing data and collection of new data, including an experimental manipulation of traits. Supervisory team will be Prof Nick Graham (Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University) and Dr Gareth Williams (School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University). Additional supervision, research funding top up, and an internship will come from Prof David Mouillot (University of Montpellier), and Dr Tim McClanahan (Wildlife Conservation Society).

2)      Widening our view of the reef: the landscape ecology of disturbance and recovery on Pacific coral reefs – http://www.envision-dtp.org/portal/projects/002879/widening-our-view-of-the-reef–the-landscape-ecology-of-disturbance-and-recovery-on-pacific-coral-reefs. This project will utilise time series data collected across 40 Pacific coral reef islands and atolls to quantify the landscape-scale spatial properties of benthic and fish communities. The project will have a focus on disturbance signatures and spatial patterns of recovery in reef communities. The project will include both novel data collection and an internship in Hawaii. Supervisory team will be Dr Gareth Williams, and Prof John Healey (Bangor University) and Prof Nick Graham (Lancaster University). Additional supervision, training, and research funding will come from Dr Jamie Gove (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, USA), and Dr Eric Conklin (The Nature Conservancy).

Deadline for applications is 6th January 2017, with PhD’s due to start in October 2017.
