Advanced Course Living Oceans and Climate Change

07-13 July 2018 – Peniche (Portugal)

This advanced course will address current challenges in marine ecosystem research, marine food webs and sustainable use of marine resources. The course intends to expose graduate students (master or PhD level) to recent developments and methodologies in marine ecology under changing environments. It will be based on a holistic approach where experiments, field observations and models (statistical and mechanistic) will be combined to address current challenges in marine ecology. Keynote speakers will describe present recent advances in research with an ecosystem approach. In addition to the academic program, the course will offer to the participants the opportunity of enjoying the friendly city of Peniche that claims to be “The Wave Capital”.

 Living Oceans and Climate Change is sponsored by Oceano Azul Foundation and is organized by Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (ESTM-IPLeiria and MARE-IPLeiria) and Berlengas Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO). The advanced course has as scientific partners the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), CCMAR – University of Algarve, CIIMAR – University of Porto, Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, MARBEC, Sète (France) and University of Göteborg (Sweden), and the support of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal), Institute for Nature Conservation and Forestry (ICNF), Peniche City Council and David Melgueiro Association.

 

The advanced course “Living Oceans and Climate Change” is an output of the project JELLYFISHERIES [PTDC/MAR-BIO/0440/2014-POCI-01-0145 FEDER-016772], that aims to unveil the underlying mechanisms through which global anthropogenic changes interact with jellyfish populations in Portuguese coastal ecosystems.

Venue:

The advanced course will be held at CETEMARES – Marine Sciences R&D, Education, and Knowledge Dissemination Centre, which is on the coast of the western region of Portugal, approximately 90 km from Lisbon. There are transport links between Peniche and Lisbon by bus services.

 

Travels and Accommodations:

Participants will be responsible for organizing and paying their own travel costs as well as accommodation.

 

Cost:

The course will be free of charge for the participants.
