Call for Nominations for the GEO Blue Planet Steering Committee

The Group on Earth Observations Oceans and Society: Blue Planet Initiative (GEO Blue Planet) is seeking nominations of ocean and coastal observing experts and ocean and coastal-related service users, ocean and coastal social science and policy experts, industry representatives, non-governmental organization representatives, non-profit organization representatives and intergovernmental organization representatives to serve on the Initiative’s Steering Committee.

 

Call for Nominations for the GEO Blue Planet Advisory Board

The Group on Earth Observations Oceans and Society: Blue Planet Initiative (GEO Blue Planet) is seeking nominations of high level ocean data providers and user representatives (such as individuals affiliated with international non-profit organizations, non-governmental organizations, intergovernmental organizations, development banks, etc.) to serve on the Initiative’s Advisory Board.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee is the main decision-making body of GEO Blue Planet and is responsible for coordinating GEO Blue Planet’s activities. Serving on the Steering Committee will provide an opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of stakeholders in ocean observing, ocean management, ocean policy and sustainable development, and to identify priorities and projects that link ocean observation providers with users.

The Steering Committee will meet in person once yearly and monthly via teleconference. Steering Committee members are expected to cover their own travel costs, though limited funding may be available to support representatives from developing countries. Steering Committee members serve a 3-year term with the potential for two one-year extensions. The expected time commitment is 5 to 10 hours per month.

This call seeks nominations of ocean and coastal observing experts and ocean and coastal social science and policy experts, industry representatives, non-governmental organization representatives, non-profit organization representatives, and intergovernmental organization representatives to serve on the GEO Blue Planet Steering Committee. Selected nominees will receive invitations to serve on the Steering Committee from the Steering Committee co-chairs. 

Selection will be based on:

  • Expertise in ocean and/or coastal observation data collection, processing, dissemination or use.
  • How the nominee complements the expertise of the existing Steering Committee members.
  • The need to strengthen Steering Committee diversity (expertise, institutional background, gender and geographical balance).

Self nominations are welcome.

Advisory Board

The Advisory Board will provide oversight and strategic direction to GEO Blue Planet. Serving on the Advisory Board will provide an opportunity to guide the direction of collaborative efforts related to ocean observations in the context of sustainable development and advocate for need for ocean observations and services for societal benefit.

The Advisory Board will meet quarterly via teleconference and, if possible, once yearly in person. Advisory Board members will serve a 2 year term, renewable once.

This call seeks nominations of high level ocean and coastal data providers and user representatives (such as individuals affiliated with international non-profit organizations, non-governmental organizations, intergovernmental organizations, development banks, etc) to serve on GEO Blue Planet’s

Advisory Board. Selected nominees will receive invitations to serve on the Advisory Board from the existing GEO Blue Planet leadership.
Selection will be based on:

  • Expertise in steering, coordinating and/or managing international ocean and coastal observation, management, policy or funding programmes.
  • How the applicant complements GEO Blue Planet’s goal and objectives. 
  • The need for Advisory Board diversity (expertise, institutional background, gender and geographical balance).
