Job Description
The Physical and Chemical Oceanography Research Group in Global Ocean Observation Research Center (Director: Shuhei Masuda), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) invites applications for a Researcher (Ⅱ) to participate in physical and/or chemical oceanography research projects at basin to global scales.
[Research Description]
Our group specializes in shipboard observations to describe and understand oceanic environments and/or develop ocean observation technologies. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to our understanding of the physical and chemical properties of Earth’s environmental systems through suitable approaches and observation data obtained using pre-existing or newly developed technologies.
The duties of the successful candidate will include the following:
1. Undertaking month-long, land-to-land research cruises to conduct multi-parameter high-accuracy observations. The typical schedule for these cruises is approximately once every 2 years.
2. Conducting innovative research in physical and/or chemical oceanography by analyzing and interpreting the collected observation data to describe and understand ocean systems and their variability.
We welcome those who show broad interest in new approaches and in advancing ocean sciences. The successful candidate will be required to propose scientifically meaningful themes as described in the above duties and conduct independent individual research using the most effective approaches available, including numerical simulation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Strong communication skills and the ability to work successfully as part of a team aboard a research cruise ship are also essential.
[Relevant Research Fields]
Physical Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Meteorology, Computer Science, Mathematical statistics
