The University of Helsinki is an international scientific community of 40,000 students and researchers. It is one of the leading multidisciplinary research universities and ranks among the top 100 international universities in the world. We are an equal opportunity employer and offer an attractive and diverse workplace in an inspiring environment with a variety of development opportunities and benefits.

The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences is Finland’s most high-profile and extensive hub of research and teaching in the field. The Faculty educates experts to meet the needs of universities, research institutes, government, schools and the business sector.

A 3 year post-doctoral position is available at the University of Helsinki, Finland to work in Prof. Craig Primmer’s research group. The position is a part of a project aiming to understand the molecular mechanisms of a large-effect locus associated with pubertal timing in Atlantic salmon (e.g. Barson et al. 2015; Verta et al. 2020; Ahi et al. 2022; Czlorlich et al. 2022).

The post-doc will be responsible for conducting and co-supervising research within the project using molecular genetic and/or cellular approaches aiming to functionally validate molecular interactions suggested by earlier functional genomics research (e.g. Kurko et al. 2020; Verta et al. 2020; Ahi et al. 2022, 2023). The project could involve approaches including any of the following: CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing in cell lines and/or salmon, Tol2-mediated reporter assays, etc. This work is complemented by ecological, evolutionary and quantitative genetic research being conducted in related projects by others in the group.

An appointee to the position shall hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work. Suitable applicants will have a strong background in molecular biology in any species as demonstrated by publications in relevant fields and will show an interest in developing and applying molecular biological approaches in Atlantic salmon. Experience with the approaches mentioned above is advantageous (but not necessarily required), as is an interest in developmental and/or evolutionary biology. The ability to work as a part of a larger research team addressing related questions, and ability to communicate in English is also important.

Informal inquiries can be directed to Professor Craig Primmer (craig.primmer@helsinki.fi).

Formal applications should include:

  • a CV including a list of publications and with names and contact details of at least two referees
  • a max. 2-page letter of motivation

To apply, please submit your application using the University of Helsinki electronic recruitment system by clicking on “Apply for job” via this link.

The deadline for applications is Monday May 22, 2023. The position is available immediately, but a start date up to late 2023 may be considered (although an earlier start is preferred).

The position is initially available until 8/2026, but an extension may be possible depending on other funding decisions. The salary will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance with the overall starting salary amounting to c. 3200-3600 EUR per month, depending on the previous relevant research experience of the candidate.
