GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The research unit “Paleoceanography” of the research division “Ocean Circulation and Climate” and research unit “Marine Geosystems” of research division “Biogeochemistry” jointly offer a

Doctoral Researcher position (m/f/d)

North Sea Sedimentation

available from April 1st 2021.

Job Description

The successful candidate will use geochemical (radiogenic isotopes, elemental and mineralogical compositions) and sedimentological properties (deposition rates) of marine sediments to reconstruct changes in the sedimentation patterns and sediment sources of the North Sea (in particular in the Kattegat, Skagerrak, Norwegian Channel). These areas constitute the main sink for sediments exported from the North Sea, which consist of contributions from various terrigenous and riverine input sources. The high resolution deposits, which will have to be dated by the candidate using natural and anthropogenic radionuclides, offer insights into natural versus anthropogenically driven changes in sediment supply over the past centuries. The project is embedded into a collaborative project and the results will be integrated with those of the other partners.

Qualification

This position requires a Master of Science degree in Geosciences or Environmental Sciences and knowledge of paleoceanography, sedimentology, marine geochemistry or a related field. The ability and willingness to participate in sea-going research cruises to collect the sediments for the project are also a requirement. Very good written and spoken English skills are also essential. Experience in working in a laboratory environment and in data analysis are desirable.

The position is funded for a period of three years. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a part-time position according to 75 % of a full-time equivalent. The position cannot be split. Flexible working times are possible.
