Background

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) has been supporting numerous visiting researchers and university courses at the Helgoland site for over 100 years. Every year, about 1000 external scientist sand students make use of this expertise and service. The advertised position is located in the Visiting Research and Science Communication Division. This section is an essential part of the infrastructure and service providing areas of the AWI island sites and includes the provision of teaching materials (including biological organisms) to German universities, on-site support and guided sampling, as well as knowledge transfer to various sectors of society.

Tasks

  • Solution-oriented project management of the guest research on Helgoland
  • Operational day-to-day business in contact and communication with visiting scientists and courses, communication and technical advice for the preparation and implementation of a successful research and training stay on the island sites
  • Organisation of information and communication flows (internal/external), including correspondence in English and German
  • Acquisition and management of third-party funding
  • Creation of web presences, management of web-based portals (each at least bilingual – English and German), creation of reports, brochures, promotional materials
  • Applying for shiptime on various research vessels in the context of guest research and capacity building
  • Collaboration in sustainable guest research with corresponding quality management, self-responsible preparation of reports for the department head and LK II coordination
  • Review of existing approaches in international comparison
  • Establishment and implementation of a sustainable approach
  • Data management of the data obtained in the course of the guest research, maintenance of the databases and project metadata

Requirements

  • Completed Master in a natural science discipline, preferably in marine science, PhD advantageous
  • Qualifications and experience in project management, preferably in research and infrastructure projects
  • Very good knowledge of strategy development, implementation and leadership, science development, national/international research landscape, stakeholder engagement
  • Very good knowledge of written and spoken German and English (English B2 level),
  • Very good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Good knowledge of the North Sea and Baltic Sea ecosystem
  • Media skills, intercultural skills
  • Organisational talent, flexibility, initiative and ability to work in a team

Desirable skills and knowledge

  • Knowledge of budgeting and award criteria
  • Publication activity
  • Knowledge of the scientific, research and funding landscape in the national and international field
  • Experience in submitting applications / obtaining funding
  • Knowledge of statistics, qualitative data analysis, website creation, integration of portals
  • Knowledge of relevant legal procedures and protocols (e.g. Nagoya Protocol, Red List etc.)

This is a full-time position, limited to 2 years with the optionto become a permanent employment. It is also suitable for part-time employment. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level 13. The place of employment will be Helgoland.
