The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) in Bremen is a member of the Leibniz Association, which is supported by the German Federal and State Governments. About the PARAWET- Peru Project:

ZMT’s PARAWET-Peru Project aims to improve the flow of environmental information produced by different governmental sector in Peru for decision making. For this purpose, the ZMT Bremen will support national research institutions in the collection, interpretation and communication of information about climate change relevant, ecological and socio-economic information in the focus regions and focus ecosystems (coastal wetlands with focus on mangroves). To improve the understanding of climate change vulnerability, available information from monitoring and assessments in coastal wetlands of the focus regions will be screened and evaluated. ZMT will provide support to Peruvian Partners in the further development of a Marine Atlas Platform. The support will consist of capacity development workshops, dissemination and consultation activities with a clear focus on improving the skills of partners and other interested organizations in data visualization and management in Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

The project will work closely with partners from the EbAMar Project (GIZ), which aims to integrate and implement ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) measures at all levels (national, regional, local) into the strategic planning and investment processes for coastal and marine zones.

The project will be implemented in close cooperation with the ZMT working groups WG Ecological BiogeochemistryWG Institutional and Behavioural EconomicsWG Mangrove Ecology, and WG Data Science and Technology.

Your tasks:

  • Implementation and coordination of the project activities in the PARAWET-Peru project
  • Providing consulting services to the design of a Marine Atlas in Peru to project partners (i.a. Instituto del Mar del Peru – IMARPE, local, regional and national government)
  • Communicating project content to the funding agency GIZ (Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH), stakeholders and the public
  • Assessing climate change vulnerability and Ecosystem-based Adaptation measures of coastal wetlands in the focus regions (Piura, Lima)
  • Engaging local stakeholders, which includes conducting stakeholder workshops, capacity development and participatory research methods.

Your profile

  • Master’s Degree and preferably a PhD in environmental science or a related field of study (e.g. geoinformatics, geography, sustainability science)
  • Experience in the engagement of stakeholders and participatory research
  • Experience in working with Geographical Information Systems (GIS), in data and information visualisation
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and Spanish
  • Excellent organisation and communication skills
  • Willingness for short and long stays in Peru (Lima, Piura)
  • Experience in providing consulting services for policy or industry is an asset
  • Expertise in one of the following fields is an asset: Designing and conducting participatory monitoring and assessments of coastal wetlands, sustainable aquaculture, mangrove conservation and restoration, remote sensing and mapping
