We are looking for a senior expert in underwater acoustics with demonstrable world leading experience in underwater acoustic measurement and international standards development. Underwater sound propagation modelling expertise would be an advantage.

The responsibilities of the Principal Research Scientist include:

  • Leading, designing and executing experimental and theoretical research including development of novel measurement tools and methods in support of current and future underwater acoustic applications (across all TRL levels);
  • Creating a vision for the underwater acoustics area with the Science Area Leader for the Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics Group;
  • Significant contribution to play a leading role on national and international standards committees (e.g. BSI, ISO, IEC), represent NPL and the UK at international fora and work to address UK government challenges for the underwater acoustics area;
  • Leading and fostering the team’s engagement with UK and overseas organisations (other National Metrology Institutes (NMIs), UK Government, Academia and Commercial Customers) to maintain NPL’s position as a leading NMI in underwater acoustics now and for the future; including establishment of mutually beneficial collaborations.
  • Responding to commercial and grant-based Invitations to Tender (ITTs) and obtaining research funding for this area aligned with NPL strategic priorities;
  • Consulting and working in partnership with internal and external stakeholders to determine how NPL can provide support to improve the quality of methods and tools used for underwater acoustic applications, and develop tools and methods for future applications that require traceability (both documentary and metrological);
  • Working in partnership with other NPL departments, and collaborating across NPL to develop new opportunities and to ensure the safe and effective conduct of research and services;
  • Assuming responsibility for the standard of delivery in your technical area (to time, cost and quality with focus on the customer) and ensure that all work is delivered in accordance with the NPL quality system;
  • Keeping consistent documentation (Keep accurate and organized electronic records) and ensuring this is maintained by others delivering work in underwater acoustics at NPL
  • Project planning and management, including development of project proposals, management of projects to achieve results in accordance with milestone schedules and within budget, and development of partnerships with other internal and external partners and Customers. and coordinating the delivery team (other scientists);
  • Working with industry partners to establish formal collaborative agreements to create innovative, high-impact research programs, and transfer their successes directly to industry.
  • Taking responsibility for taking reasonable duty of care for Health & Safety of themselves and of other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work and always follow direct instructions given with regards to Health & Safety

The principal duties for this position are at Teddington site, and travel for work, including Customer site visits, in situ measurements work and representing NPL at national and international meetings, conferences and events.

About You

A successful candidate will be sought out and internationally respected by the underwater acoustics community for your expertise and have;

  • 5+ years experience winning, leading and conducting international research work with published articles in internationally recognized scientific journals;
  • experience leading national and international standards development, or a track record contributing to underwater acoustics standards;
  • track record of developing and implementing technical solutions in underwater acoustics funded by the civil and/or defence sectors;
  • track record of presenting results in the form of reports, manuscripts, oral presentations;
  • experience of accurately organising, evaluating and conveying problem statements and technical results;
  • experience of developing and executing business strategy to commercial and technical initiatives;
  • experience of managing full life cycle of large scale research programs;
  • demonstrable experience leading and motivating scientific and technical staff;
