I. Title: Research Assistant – Statistical Analysis

II. Position Summary:

Ocean Discovery League (ODL) is looking for one research assistant for short-term contracts to join our growing team. The Statistical Research Assistant will play a key role in research and data analysis for the Global Deep Sea Capacity Assessment (GDSCA), which is a baseline assessment of technical and human capacity for deep sea exploration in every coastal country with deep ocean (>200 m).

The Statistical Analysis Research Assistant will work closely with the ODL Capacity Assessment team to analyze the results of a global online survey and research. The ideal candidate will organize and quality-control the survey results into a fully functional database. They will statistically analyze the data to answer specific research questions as well as derive emergent trends and patterns present in the data beyond the original research questions. Finally, they will effectively communicate the results via creative visual and text-based materials.

III.  Essential Job Functions: 

  • Organize, analyze, and synthesize survey data from 115+ countries that participated in the Global Deep Sea Capacity Assessment. Organize and assure quality control of database.
  • Conduct statistical analyses to answer specific research questions as well as derive emergent trends and patterns present in the data beyond the original research questions.
  • Produce beautiful, understandable graphs, infographics, and other visuals to convey findings to expert and non-expert audiences.
  • Document data analysis protocols and methods.
  • Contribute written and visual materials to the GDSCA report to be released in Feb 2022.
  • Maintain documents in Google Docs and Sheets, PubPub, and other platforms
  • Maintain high levels of consistency and quality across all deliverables.
  • Work collaboratively with ODL team, management, and partners.

IV. Other Job Specifications

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree or equivalent experience required, with a background in statistics, analytics, or related quantitative discipline. Experience analyzing survey data is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with mathematical and statistical software such as R, SAS, Stata, or Python. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to explain methods and results.
  • Strong design skills to translate complex data into aesthetic, creative visuals, which are understandable to non-experts.
  • Ability to work independently and be resourceful and creative.
  • Excellent written, visual, and oral communications skills. Ability to organize, analyze, and present survey results. Detail-oriented with clear and error-free writing.
  • Strong communication skills with team members, management, and collaborators.
  • Organizational and time management skills to keep projects on track to the finish. Ability to create long- and short-term plans, including setting milestones and meeting deadlines.
  • Passion for or interest in marine science and ocean exploration would be helpful.
  • English fluency required.
