Position Overview

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to develop ocean color remote sensing methods to detect swarms of the zooplankton Calanus finmarchicus (C. finmarchicus) in the western North Atlantic. They will work with field and satellite observations to build computational models / remote sensing algorithms and examine the behavior of C. finmarchicus swarms. There will be opportunities for the postdoctoral scientist to develop, lead and co-author manuscripts for publication in the primary research literature. This work is part of a project with collaborators at Bigelow Laboratory, in Scotland and in Canada.

Requirements

  • PhD in remote sensing, optical or biological oceanography or similar
  • Experience in ocean color remote sensing or hydrological optics or remote sensing algorithm development
  • Strong quantitative and programming skills (Python preferred, but not required)
  • Experience working with large, diverse datasets (experience working with satellite ocean color data preferred, but not required)
  • Ability to design and execute computational workflows for data manipulation, analysis and interpretation
  • Track record demonstrating a commitment to publishing research findings
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with significant motivation to publish in the peer-reviewed literature
  • Strong interest in team-based interdisciplinary science
