The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Earth Sciences has around 70 employees. Our department works to achieve diversity in the workplace and to create a family-friendly environment, and in addition, Sweden has generous family leave and childcare policies. The Department trains Earth scientists and geographers, who can meet the increased need for geoscientists and geographers in society. We have bachelor and master programs in Earth Sciences and in Geography as well as third-cycle education in several Earth Science subjects. Our main research themes are “Climate and Climate Change”, “Earth Surface Processes” and “The Geosphere” and the research strategy of the department emphasizes on further development of Earth System Science.

The post of associate senior lecturer is a career-development position aimed at giving the employee an opportunity to improve their teaching and academic capabilities. At the end of the term of employment, an associate senior lecturer may apply for promotion to the post of senior lecturer. If the associate senior lecturer is judged to be suitable and to meet the criteria for promotion, they will be employed on a permanent basis as a senior lecturer.

Subject area

Ecosystem Science (Ekosystemvetenskap)

Research Environment

This position is co-funded by the Strategic Research Area BECC (Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in a Changing Climate; www.becc.lu.se/), which is a cooperation between Lund university and the University of Gothenburg. BECC brings together scientists from natural and social sciences to perform research essential in understanding the impacts of climate change on biodiversity and ecosystem services. This position is particularly linked to the BECC grand challenge “Carbon Cycle & Climate Change”.

The successful candidate should conduct research at the Skogaryd Research Catchment (www.gu.se/en/earth-sciences/skogaryd-research-catchment-0), which is included in the national infrastructure networks SITES (Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Sciences; www.fieldsites.se/en-GB) and ICOS-Sweden (www.icos-sweden.se/). The Skogaryd Research Catchment has several eddy covariance systems for greenhouse gas (GHG) flux measurements.

This position relates to the department’s research themes “Climate and Climate Change” and “Earth Surface Processes”, and the successful candidate is expected to contribute to their further development. You will be part of the Biogeochemistry research group (www.gu.se/en/research/biogeochemistry-0) at the Department of Earth Sciences. Our research concerns how biogeochemical cycles are influenced by climate and their potential feedback mechanisms, where we especially try to find mitigations for greenhouse gas emissions. Cooperation with other research group at the department and faculty are expected.

Job assignments

The main task of the position is to conduct research (not less than 50%) in the subject area, using eddy covariance (EC) techniques for greenhouse gas (GHG) measurements from terrestrial ecosystems. The candidate is expected to utilize the ongoing measurements within the Skogaryd Research Catchment. The candidate should contribute to the aims for the infrastructure, which is to conduct and develop quantification of GHG balances at the landscape scale including land-atmosphere, land-water, and water-atmosphere exchange, as well as to elucidate the underlying biogeochemical processes.

Teaching duties (20 %) cover Bachelor and Master courses in Earth Sciences, Geography and Environmental Sciences. The candidate must be able to teach in English and is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years of admission.

Time for competence development will be granted (at least 10%). The candidate should also support quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) of EC data at the Skogaryd Research Catchment (20 %) and should use those for own research.

Some administrative duties are also part of the job assignments as well as collaborations within the academia and with the surrounding society. The distribution of time between research, teaching and other tasks follows the Department’s strategy and is determined annually in an individual service plan.

The assessment of your application will be based primarily on your scientific merits. Pedagogic experience and skills will be assessed with the same care.

When assessing scientific proficiency, the successful candidate must have proven experiences in eddy covariance techniques for greenhouse gas measurements, primarily through peer-reviewed scientific publications or doctoral thesis. Experiences with large data handling is of merit. The candidate should also show a general understanding of biogeosciences of the boreal and temperate landscape. Documented success in attracting external funding in competition is a strong merit. Experiences in coordinating research projects or in the administration of research infrastructures is meritorious.

When assessing pedagogical proficiency, emphasis will be placed on the ability to successfully plan, perform and lead teaching. Documented ability to supervise students at different levels is meritorious.
