1. Organizational setting

The World Maritime University (WMU) is a postgraduate and research university established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization, the maritime agency of the United Nations. WMU offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs, postgraduate diplomas, and Professional Development Courses with the highest standards in maritime and oceans education and training. WMU graduates hold key posts in maritime and ocean education, governments, administrations, in industry, or represent their governments internationally. WMU is home to the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute, with a research agenda addressing the interface of science/policy/industry and capacity building in support of the UN Decades of Ocean Science, and UN Decade of Habitat Restoration.

2. Main purpose

We invite applications for a Research Fellow position to support our work in ocean carbon research. This position will support the “MEESO”, “Mission Atlantic” and “Ocean ICU” projects.

Climate change is a global problem driven by human behavior. Therefore changes in human behavior are needed in order to be able to manage major climate risks. Most of the science done in this field is focused on natural science, and social science in the field of ocean carbon and climate change is scarce. Therefore the right person for this job has an interest in oceans, climate changes and human behavior.

3. Working relationships

Internal contacts – the incumbent will liaise and interact with relevant faculty members on a regular basis as well as with support staff when needed.

External contacts – the incumbent will collaborate closely with the project collaborators.

4. Duties, responsibilities

The successful candidate will work on the projects “MEESO”, “Mission Atlantic” and “Ocean ICU” funded by the EU Commission. Central tasks for the Research Fellow will include assisting with social science data management and analyses, manuscript preparation and communication of research results.

The candidate will collaborate with an international consortium of bio-geochemists, biophysical modellers, biodiversity and fisheries scientists, social scientists, and ocean governance researchers.

5. Minimum requirements – education,   experience and language skills

Education

Essential:

  • MSc in social sciences, politics, sociology, global politics, international relations, geography, cross-disciplinary environmental or sustainability science or related field.

Experience

Essential:

  • Experience in qualitative research methods;
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate across disciplines (e.g. natural scientists, social scientists, environmental economists, policy analysts, resource managers, industry representatives), and in a highly international work environment;
  • Experience in project work and deadline completion;

Desirable

  • Experience with some combination of the following is also considered beneficial:
  • Experience in qualitative research tools e.g. QDataminer, text-mining or similar;
  • Experience in policy analyses;
  • Experience or knowledge in any or all of the following: ocean sustainability, climate change, biodiversity;
  • Previous experience with applied research, qualitative methods/analyses is preferred.

Application

The Research Fellow position provides for a monthly stipend of 22,000 SEK (free of income tax in Sweden).
