Job Advertisement: Postdoctoral Researcher in seawater chemistry and coral physiology
We seek to hire a postdoctoral researcher to work collaboratively with a dynamic and interdisciplinary research team. The Postdoctoral research will be co-advised by Dr. Ku?ulei Rodgers (Hawai?i Institute of Marine Biology) and Dr. Keisha Bahr (Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi) and work alongside Dr. Ellen Briggs (University of Hawai?i) and Dr. Chris Sabine (University of Hawai?i) on a collaborative NSF funded project.
The goal of this project is to examine the fundamental connections between seawater chemistry and coral physiology by investigating the modulation of seawater chemistry in the microenvironment surrounding corals. This work will be conducted at the Hawai?i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) on Moku o Lo?e in K?ne?ohe Bay, Hawai?i. The researcher will set-up, operate, and oversee lab experimentations utilizing the state-of-the-art experimental mesocosm facility at the Coral Reef Ecology Lab (www.coralreefecologylab.com) at HIMB. The researcher will also maintain an ecological database that includes detailed information on all experiments as well as assists in respirometry work and sensor development. The researcher will be expected to carry out a portion of the work outlined in our grant and will be encouraged to develop studies within their specific area of interest as they relate to coral reef ecosystem science. The start date is somewhat
flexible, but no later than June 2021, and the appointment is for one year with the possibility to extend for an additional 1-2 years provided
acceptable progress and funding availability.
Minimum qualifications are a Ph.D. in marine ecology, chemistry, oceanography, environmental science, biogeochemistry, or related fields and evidence of scientific productivity in the form of two or more peer-reviewed publications. Additional qualifications include experience
with maintaining seawater systems, conducting manipulative experimentations, and collecting discrete carbon system measurements in
seawater. Evidence of strong science writing and communication skills, ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team, and
experience mentoring undergraduate or graduate students are desirable qualifications. The ideal candidate will have a background in marine
ecology as it intersects with carbonate biogeochemistry and coral reef organismal physiology.
