GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Job Description

The successful candidate will study warm events in the southeastern tropical Pacific Ocean by means of climate model simulations within the DFG-funded project “Pacific Coastal Niños – the role of Equatorial Heat Content and relation to SST phase propagation”. Performing targeted climate model experiments, the importance of equatorial heat content in determining whether a coastal warming event off Peru further develops into an equatorial El Niño will be investigated. An additional focus lies on the multi-decadal variations in the propagation direction of El Niño-related SST anomalies.

Qualification

Required:

  • Master of Science degree in Natural Sciences
  • Expertise in the field of Physical Climate Science/ Physical Oceanography
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English

Beneficial:

  • Experience with climate models, analysis of climate model data and/or statistical methods;
  • Programming skills (Fortran as well as Python, Ferret and/or Matlab);

The position is available for a funding period of 36 months. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a part-time position according to 75% of a full-time equivalent. The position can not be split. The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).
