HIFMB/AWI and Thünen Institute jointly seek for a Postdoc (w/f/d) ‘Biodiversity and Connectivity of Marine Protected Areas´ in the framework of the third-party funded project ‘CREATE – Concepts for Reducing the Effects of Anthropogenic pressures and uses on marine Ecosystems and on Biodiversity’ and addresses the research mission of the The German Marine Research Alliance on ‘Protection and Sustainable Use of Marine Areas.

With the advertised position, research questions on the topic of connectivity between marine protected areas will be pursued in the BMBF-funded project “CREATE”. Modern molecular genetic methods, in particular metabarcoding of zooplankton and environmental DNA samples, will be analysed. In addition, the Postdoc will lead the cross-disciplinary synthesis of the results within a project group, for which a lively exchange with the work of the project partners will be designed, encompassing genetic as well as biophysical and geological aspects. The PostDoc (m/f/d) is affiliated with the HIFMB Focus Group Marine Molecular Ecology.

Tasks

  • Molecular genetic analyses (metabarcoding)
  • Bioinformatic and statistical analysis of sequence data
  • Management of a project working group; organization of interdisciplinary exchange of research approaches and results within this group
  • Cross-disciplinary synthesis of research results, especially to link with results from biophysical modeling
  • Participation in research cruises, sampling and processing of environmental DNA and zoo-/ichthyoplankton samples in the field
  • Participation in and, if necessary, organization of project meetings
  • Preparation of project reports and publication of results

Requirements

  • Completed university studies (Univ.-Diploma, Master) and Phd in environmental/natural sciences, medicine or related discipline
  • Experience in molecular genetic analysis (metabarcoding)
  • Strong bioinformatics and statistical expertise
  • Ability to think in an interdisciplinary manner and synthesize results across disciplines
  • Very good communication skills, also to lead a scientific project group
  • Very good English language skills; German language skills are an advantage
  • Experience with research cruises is advantageous
  • Publications in scientific journals

This is a full-time position, limited to 3 years. The employment contract is to be concluded with the Alfred Wegener Institute for 15 months and directly thereafter with the Thünen Institute. It is also suitable for part-time employment. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level 13. The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
