Applications are invited for a position targeting research and innovation in red seaweed production and utilization. If you are interested in developing the growing topic of developing sustainable production of seaweed species for food and feed, DTU Aqua is looking for a dedicated person that will join a team at the forefront of development of cultivation of red seaweed species. Depending on the scientific qualifications of the candidate, the position can be as a postdoc (requires a PhD degree or similar) or a research assistant (requires a Master’s degree or similar). The applicants are asked to state which position they are applying for in the application.

The position is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) Section of Coastal Ecology with work location at the Danish Shellfish Centre (Nykøbing Mors, Denmark).

Responsibilities and qualifications

The work area of the position is to advance our understanding primarily of red seaweed ecology and biology in relation to production and utilization of seaweed. This includes i) developing economic and ecological sustainable hatchery methods for new species in seaweed aquaculture; with special emphasis on red seaweed species (mainly Palmaria palmata and Bonnemaisoniales); ii) developing methods for viable seaweed cultures; and iii) improving our understanding of ecological impact of seaweed cultivation including environmental interaction. Innovative skills are important, as the area requires new solutions.

You are expected to improve our capacity for conducting relevant research within the field, disseminate the results in scientific journals as well as in public media, give advice to policy makers and other relevant authorities as well as foster innovation in cooperation with the industry. We expect that you will be a driver in our new hatchery facilities and participate in building a state-of-the-art team in the hatchery. You are furthermore expected to be actively engaged in writing applications for funding as well as overseeing projects and participate in the research groups dissemination and teaching activities that include dissemination to a broader audience as schoolchildren and visitors.

Furthermore, we are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Experience in seaweed cultivation from a practical as well as a scientific point of view. It is seen as an advantage if the candidate has experience with a wide range of seaweed species and particularly red seaweed species.
  • A strong innovative approach to the research field both in relation to developing the research but also in relation to the development of new solutions and new concepts.
  • Furthermore, the candidate should have experience, know-how, and visions for integration of scientific findings with utilisation of results on a practical level in seaweed aquaculture or ecosystem systemic analysis and management. Experience with practical methods and procedures are important.
  • The ability to contribute to the development of external cooperation and to attract funding to the research area is seen as an asset.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) if you apply for a postdoc position and a Master degree (or equivalent) if you apply for a position as research assistant.
