GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

Job Description

The position is part of the German Alliance for Marine Research (Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung; DAM) Research Mission “Marine carbon sinks in decarbonization pathways” RETAKE project (Carbon Dioxide Removal by Alkalinity Enhancement: Potential, Benefits and Risks). The research will involve working as part of a vibrant interdisciplinary team at GEOMAR and collaborating with other marine research institutes in Germany and elsewhere. The scientist is expected to perform simulations with a state-the-art Earth System model (FOCI) and test various scenarios of alkalinity enhancement in German waters and also various open-ocean regions worldwide. Model parameterizations and scenarios will be informed by culture experiments and mesocosm studies, as well as by economic and legal analyses performed by other research groups participating in the Research Mission, and with whom close collaboration is expected. The Research Mission includes a range of networking activities among scientists and with stakeholders, including industry and policymakers. Model results will be analyzed and published in the peer-reviewed literature, but will also be used to inform stakeholders and society about the potential, benefits and risks of alkalinity enhancement.

Qualification

We are looking for a creative and committed scientist with an MSc or PhD in a natural sciences subject and extensive knowledge of physical and/or biogeochemical ocean modelling or Earth system modelling. Knowledge of carbon dioxide removal approaches and their assessment will be beneficial. Experience in working as part of an interdisciplinary team would be helpful. The working language is English, however, proficiency in German or the ability to acquire a basic understanding would be beneficial.

The position is available for an initial funding period of three years, subject to funds being approved.

The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position and there is the possibility to split it. Flexible working time models are possible in principle.
