Tasks
  • Optimize eDNA laboratory work protocols for gelatinous zooplankton,
  • Apply DNA metabarcoding and quantitative PCR analyses for assessing gelatinous zooplankton diversity and relative abundances from filtered water and sediment samples,
  • Participate in at least one Arctic expedition to collect eDNA samples and optical (ROV) datasets for subsequent analyses,
  • Present your work at national and international meetings and write up the results for peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Requirements

  • A Master degree in Biological sciences (finished or being finalized)
  • Strong background in molecular laboratory skills and analyses
  • Record of polar field work and expertise in pelagic sampling methods
  • Basic knowledge in bioinformatic analyses of large sequence datasets
  • Good data-analysis skills (preferably using R)
  • Experience with carrying out optical pelagic surveys (e.g. ROV handling) is considered advantageous
  • Strong team player and cooperation skills
  • Strong English communication skills, both verbally and in writing

The position is limited to 3 years. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level 13 (66%). The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.

All doctoral candidates will be members of AWI’s postgraduate program POLMAR or another graduate school and thus benefit from a comprehensive training program and extensive support measures.
