GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The research unit Marine Biogeochemical Modelling of the research division 2: Marine Biogeochemistry is offering a position as Scientist in Marine ecological-biogeochemical Modelling, starting on November 1, 2022 or soon thereafter, for a 3-year period with the possibility for a 3-year extension.

Job Description

The research unit Marine Biogeochemical Modelling uses numerical models that differ in their complexity: simple process models, advanced optimality- and trait-based physio-ecological models, and coupled biogeochemistry-circulation models of the ocean. We aim for improved process understanding and reliable assessments of impacts of past and likely future climate variations on marine ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles and their feedbacks in the Earth system.

We are looking for a scientist with a strong interest in marine biogeochemical cycles and/or ecological processes and their interaction with the global climate system. The successful candidate is encouraged to develop her/his own research profile while collaborating with other members of the Marine Biogeochemical Modelling research unit and, whenever applicable, other scientists at GEOMAR, Kiel University and the wider national and international research environment. Possible research areas include the dynamics of deoxygenation, the role of processes at the land-ocean interface, the interface of ecology and biogeochemistry, and applications of data assimilation, machine-learning and uncertainty-analysis methods. We expect the successful candidate to participate in emerging research opportunities and proposal writing to support our group and to develop an independent and competitive research profile.

Qualification

We are looking for a creative and committed scientist with a PhD degree in a natural sciences subject and demonstrated experience with ecological and biogeochemical ocean or Earth system modelling. Experience in working as part of an interdisciplinary and diverse team would be helpful. The working language is English.

The position is limited to 3 years, an extension by 3 more years is possible.

The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position and there is the possibility to split it. The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply.

GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.

Please send your application for this position, including a conceptual research plan indicating your scientific and career goals as well as how you plan to interact and co-operate with existing activities within the research unit Biogeochemical Modelling, at GEOMAR, Kiel University and/or international programs, via email in a single pdf-file mentioning the keyword BGC2Model in the subject line. Please send your application not later than September 11th, 2022 to the following email address: bewerbung@geomar.deAs soon as the selection procedure has finished, all your application data will be removed according to data protection regulation.

For further information regarding the position and research unit please contact Prof. Dr. Andreas Oschlies (aoschlies@geomar.de).Please do not contact us by phone about the present state of procedures. However, we will answer all your questions if you send us an e-mail to bewerbung@geomar.de. In doing so, please refer to the keyword “BGC2Model”.
