GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein
(10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has
approx. 1000 employees.

The research unit Marine Biogeochemical Modelling of research division 2: Marine Biogeochemistry is offering a Scientific Programmer Position (m/f/d) starting on July 1, 2021, or soon thereafter

Job Description
We are looking for a scientific programmer with strong expertise in numerical modelling of the global ocean and/or climate system on high-performance computer systems. Initial work will
involve coupled biogeochemical-physical model development, with special focus on implementing and testing high-resolution nesting approaches and carrying out simulations with GEOMAR’s FOCI Earth system model in order to investigate the Earth system’s present state and potential future changes, including climate mitigation and carbon-dioxide removal scenarios. Work will also include implementing new marine ecological and biogeochemical model components developed in the research unit into Earth system models, testing model configurations, optimizing computational performance, developing analysis and visualization tools and setting up and maintaining code repositories.

The successful candidate will be supervised by the research group head and support various research projects of the research group that consists of scientists from a number of different
nationalities and different scientific backgrounds, working with different numerical models on a large variety of research questions centered on marine biogeochemistry in an Earth system
context. Working languages are German and English. Computer platforms to be used range from local compute servers (currently Mac-OS/Unix/Linux-based) to various high-performance
systems at Kiel University and elsewhere.

Activities will be integrated into a creative scientific environment and the opportunity will be given to actively participate in the evaluation of model results and to make this visible, for
example, through co-authorships in scientific publications.

Qualification
We are looking for a creative and experienced modeller with a Master and/or doctoral degree in a natural sciences or computer science subject. The successful candidate must have extensive knowledge of modelling the global ocean circulation, the transport of tracers and/or marine biogeochemistry. Experience with state-of-the-art Earth system models and massively parallel computer architectures is advantageous. The successful candidate is expected to have a good command of FORTRAN, C++ and Unix-based operating systems.

The position is available for a funding period of three years with the possibility of an extension (another 3 years). The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act
of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).

The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position and there is the possibility to split it.
