A motivated and enthusiastic intern is wanted to join Dr. Ron Baker’s lab based at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (www.disl.edu). This will be a 6-month, full-time internship with a possibility of extension based on performance. Preferred start date is August 7th, 2023 but can be flexible for the right candidate. Salary is $12.50/hr.

This position is funded through a NOAA RESTORE project examining the resilience of oysters, blue crabs, and spotted seatrout to environmental variability in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Primary responsibilities will involve assisting in the set-up, maintenance, and execution of laboratory mesocosm studies testing the physiological tolerances of fisheries species to multiple environmental stressors, and participating in drop sampling field surveys to explore variation in marsh edge value as nekton habitat. The multistressor mesocosm experiments will be conducted at DISL’s newly constructed, state-of-the-art wet lab facility. Field research will be mostly along the Alabama coast with some long days characterized by physically demanding and potentially arduous conditions.

The intern may also be given the opportunity to learn other ecological sampling and processing techniques, including maintaining acoustic receiver arrays which track fine-scale fish habitat usage, living shoreline monitoring techniques, oyster settlement field experiments, fisheries surveys, mapping surveys, and associated sample processing. In addition, interns will be encouraged to attend seminars  on current topics in marine science hosted at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and at the University of South Alabama.

Recent graduates (<2 years post-undergraduate science degree) with animal husbandry and/or field experience are preferred. This internship is available to U.S. citizens and residents only. Interested applicants should email materials to Dr. Baker (bakerlab@disl.org) by June 16th, 2023. Please use the email subject “OyBcSt Intern” and include:

  • a cover letter with a description of your research interests as they relate to this project,
  • your 2-page CV including contact details for 3 references, and
  • unofficial academic transcripts.

Please title all documents using the format “LastName_DocumentName”, for example “Rodriguez_CoverLetter”. Please direct questions regarding eligibility or the application process to bakerlab@disl.org.
