Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The Marine Mineral Resources Group of the research unit Magmatic and Hydrothermal Systems / RD4 Dynamics of the Ocean Floor is offering a

Doctoral researcher (m/f/d) “DOMETRAP“

starting on November 1st 2020 or on the next possible date.

The position is funded through the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the priority program 2238 “Dynamics of Ore Metal Enrichment – DOME”. In the subproject “DOMETRAP” (Dynamics of Ore MEtal TRansport in Alkaline Porphyry systems) we will investigate the geological processes and the ascent paths for precious and critical metals and metalloids in alkaline porphyry-epithermal systems using the world-class deposit Ladolam on Lihir (Papua New Guinea) as the type example. The main research focus will be on the geochemical microanalysis of melt and fluid inclusions hosted in submarine volcanic rocks. Additional samples will be collected during RV Sonne cruise SO283 “DYNAMET” in May-July 2021. The position offers the possibility to attain a doctoral degree in natural sciences.

Job Description

  • Precise determination of the contents of precious and critical metals and metalloids in bulk rock, and in melt and fluid inclusions hosted in minerals of alkaline volcanics
  • Reconstruction of the thermobarometric and physicochemical evolution of the magmas during ascent
  • Evaluation and interpretation of scientific results and writing of scientific articles in collaboration with your colleagues
  • Participation on expeditions with research vessels
  • Active participation in the interdisciplinary and international team on site and in the priority program 2238 DOME

Qualification

  • MSc (or equivalent degree) in geosciences or a related field of science
  • Knowledge of the petrography and geochemistry of igneous rocks
  • Experience in the application of in situ geochemical methods (e.g., electron microprobe, LA-ICPMS or SIMS)
  • Very good English language skills (written and spoken) are expected
  • Ability and willingness to travel (nationally/internationally) including the participation on sea-going research expeditions of several weeks
  • Experience in the field of ore deposit geology and/or marine geology is desirable
