The Institute of Geology invites applications for the position of a Research Assistant (m/f/d) in Mesozoic Palynology (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 75 %) starting on December 1st, 2020. The position is limited to 3 years. The extend of the position is 75 % of the standard working time.

Responsibilities and duties

This DFG-funded research project will focus on the early evolution of flowering plants during the late Early Cretaceous by investigating pollen records derived from marine near-shore and continental deposits. Age assignment of the pollen-bearing strata will be based on biostratigraphy coupled with high-resolution C- and Sr-isotope stratigraphy. The pollen floras of several successions located in Western Portugal and Southern Spain will be analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively using up-to-date microscopy techniques (DIC-TL, CLSM, SEM) with special focus on angiosperm pollen. The combined chemostratigraphic and palynological approach of this PhD project will provide new insights into terrestrial ecosystem dynamics during the earliest phase of diversification of angiosperms during the Early Cretaceous.

Employment conditions

To qualify for the position, applicants must have completed a research degree (e.g. Masters) in Earth or Plant Sciences by the time of appointment, and ideally should have demonstrable interest in palynology and/or paleobotany. Experience in microscopic analysis of fossil pollen would be beneficial. Travelling to field sites including stratigraphic logging and sampling will be required. Good written and verbal communication skills in English are expected.
