ORCA are one of the UK’s leading whale and dolphin conservation charities with a mission to give everyone who cares about whales and dolphins an active role in safeguarding their future. They have coordinated a national network of volunteer citizen scientists since they were founded in 2001, using ferries and cruise ships as platforms of opportunity to collect critical scientific data about whales, dolphins and porpoises in UK, European and waters around the world.
These data help identify areas of importance for cetaceans, the drivers of their occurrence and alerts us to any changes in real-time. Our data have been collected for over two decades, and are utilised by other conservation charities, government bodies and researchers to inform cetacean policy and legislation.
Role Summary:
The Data Analyst will be responsible for managing ORCA’s extensive scientific dataset, coordinating the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of the ORCA Data Portal and associated systems, and ensuring the spatial data and analytical needs of the Science and Conservation team are met. As an integral part of the science and conservation team the successful candidate will help to protect and enhance cetacean conservation through high quality database and systems management and integration.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Managing ORCA’s Data Portal and scientific data collection app
- Maintaining and checking of datasets in real-time for logical and spatial errors
- Performing data cleansing, verification, running complex queries and reports, data segmentation and data compliance
- Developing and implementing databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality
- Leading on the initiation, maintenance, support and development of ORCA’s various digital data collection systems
- Data extraction to meet research and policy requests
- Creation of data visualizations for scientific reports, social media, website content
- Supporting other members of the ORCA team where appropriate and as the business requires
