Applications are being accepted for a Postdoctoral position at the University of Victoria (UVic), Department of Geography. The postdoc will be based in Victoria, Vancouver Island, and will work under the supervision of Dr. Costa at UVic. The research focuses on developing kelp physiological condition indices for BC based on hyperspectral remote sensing imagery acquired by the Hakai Airborne Coastal Observatory. The research will address the following:

  • Develop protocols for imagery acquisition, vicarious and radiometric calibration. Task: The postdoc will work with Hakai to optimize acquisition geometry and develop vicarious calibration protocols for the AISA Fenix Hyperspectral Camera (379-2054nm resolution) based on in situ and lab hyperspectral measurements. (publication expected)
  • Develop kelp physiological indices based on hyperspectral imagery. Task: The postdoc will use hyperspectral imagery and field data (pigment composition, carbon and bryozoan) to define reflectance-based indices related to physiological conditions and associated in situ environmental conditions. (publication expected)

Ideal qualifications: A Ph.D. degree (completed by the time of appointment) in optical (hyperspectral) remote sensing and Earth/biology/ocean/geography systems discipline. Expertise in hyperspectral remote sensing and nearshore habitat ecology is ideal. Other fields of expertise to be considered include oceanography, marine ecology, scientific computing and statistics, and strong collaborative skills.

Technical skills required: Programming skills (MATLAB®, python), statistical analysis skills, airborne hyperspectral imagery processing, analysis of multi-dimensional large data sets.

Application closure date: January 28, 2022.

Start date: May 1, 2022.

Position Length: Two years, pending annual review

Salary: $60,000

Applicants must submit:

  • A CV, including the e-mail and phone number for three references;
  • A short cover letter explaining the applicant’s motivation for working on the project and how previous experience qualifies them for this position;
  • Reprints of 2 published papers.
