At the VLIZ Marine Observation Centre (MOC), we are performing essential ad-hoc and long-term multi-disciplinary observations in the marine environment to improve our understanding of dynamics and change of the marine and coastal ecosystems. We use innovative and integrated observation systems to generate high quality data. We are continuously working on further improvement of data collection and processing pipelines. Valorization is key and realized through research and derived marine services towards stakeholders in research, policy, industry and society.

Your tasks

  • Operational support before and during scientific campaigns at sea.
  • Sensor network maintenance.
  • Sensor data flow management (coordination of structured data flow + automation).
  • Sensor data processing and further development of AI and machine learning pipelines (research & development).
  • Sensor data analysis for marine biodiversity imaging and acoustic sensors.
For each function, VLIZ considers enthusiastic involvement, service minded, excellent professionalism and integrity as important characteristics.

Your profile

  • Bachelor or Master in Bioinformatics, electromechanical or industrial engineering or equivalent through experience.
  • Ability to work independently and in team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willingness to spend time at sea for multiple days.
  • Willing to work in an international context.

Following skills are considered an asset:

  • Strong electrical and electronics background.
  • Experience with networking and machine-to-machine communication.
  • Excellent computer literacy.
  • Experience with data handling and processing.
  • Experience with deep learning and neural networks.
  • Programming experience (C/C++, Python, R).
  • Affinity with (marine) research and innovation; and sea-going experience.
