Since its start, VLIZ manages and collects a lot of marine scientific data and information. To increase the impact of these, we make them open and public in the best possible way. This vacancy features in the current initiatives of the European Commission to initiate, promote and implement Open Science and Open Data, the so-called “European Open Science Cloud” (EOSC).

Your tasks

  • Coordination of the European Open Science Cloud-initiatives and projects in which VLIZ is involved (E.g. EOSC Life, ENVI FAIR, EOSC future).
  • Planning and follow up of deliverables, tasks, agreements of the Open Science Team towards both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the content of project proposals coordinated with other partners in various consortia, as well as to the actual financial and progress reporting during their execution and fulfillment. Interaction with the VLIZ IT-division regarding deployment and adoption of cloud-related developments.

Main responsibilities

  • Project follow-up

    • Follow-up on timing and budget.
    • Participate in (inter)national project meetings with external partners, as VLIZ contact.
    • Support the project team. Keep the long-term overview, as well as the near-term deadlines, and adjust if necessary.
    • Write external project reports. Provide input for the administrative reporting.
  • Project prospection

    • Collaborate with all internal divisions to bring the different needs and wishes related to Open Science together in well-organized long-term plans.
    • Familiarize yourself with the marine science domain in general, and VLIZ’s own data systems and data flows to partners. Based on this insight you will explore future opportunities for the improvements of our own systems in a way that aligns with the goals of all stakeholders.
    • Search connection in (international) networks, detect new projects.
    • Prepare project applications, elaborate work plans, both considering available resources.
  • Delve into the subject area, follow trends and use that knowledge to develop new methods/products/projects, to ensure up-to-date marine data pipelines at VLIZ

    • Apply knowledge for continuous improvement of methods, products, and projects.
    • Apply creative and innovative ideas and initiatives.
    • Follow up on and implement contemporary trends regarding open science.
    • Take up, share, and help further the broad vision and strategy from VLIZ, as well as the targeted concrete views and goals taken up by the open science team.
  • Take responsibility for the expansion and valorisation of data systems and the expertise of the Data Centre

    • Define methods and approach for solving bottlenecks and gaps; make proposals with regards to new initiatives.
    • Detection of needs: proactively respond to the needs of scientists; translate these needs to the VLIZ operations.
    • Gather and deploy external knowledge.
  • Take on the role of ambassador to the outside world, and promote the reputation of VLIZ as an (intern)national contact point for marine scientific research

    • External communication: attend (inter)national meetings
    • Attend and represent VLIZ at network events.
    • Detect needs, monitor actively the scientific landscape, respond actively to needs of scientists, translate this to VLIZ operations.
    • Communicate on and promote the use of VLIZ services and infrastructure.

Your profile

Knowledge

  • Master or PhD with a scientific background (marine, engineering, or informatics)
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Experience with (international) project management
  • General knowledge of the marine research landscape in Flemish, Belgian and European context
  • Practical knowledge of procedures of scientific data management
  • Practical knowledge of and experience with technical development of data systems
  • Knowledge of and experience with (marine) biological or life science data management is a plus
  • General knowledge of cloud technology, e-infrastructure and data science is a plus
  • General knowledge of Linked Open Data policies and techniques
  • General knowledge of Semantic Web and Knowledge Graph concepts and approaches
  • Knowledge of the EU Open Science Cloud and FAIR Data policies

Skills

  • Willingness to work in an international context
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in English and possibly Dutch
