Background

In the division “Biosciences”, section “Shelf Seas Systems Ecology” (Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research) we are looking for a Bachelor/ Master student (Biology/Ecology/Physiology).

Project description

The research consortium RETAKE (https://retake.cdrmare.de/en/) assesses the potential, feasibility, and side effects of Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) as a means to reliably and sustainably remove CO2 from the atmosphere. RETAKE will examine a range of mineral alkalinity sources with respect to dissolution kinetics, CO2 sequestration potential, and side effects on chemistry and biology.

There will be an in situ mesocosm experiment on OAE in Helgoland from 10th March to 24th April 2023. We will check for possible ecological and biogeochemical impacts of OAE on the zooplankton community.

Tasks

  • The candidate will study the effects of OAE on the physiological functions (e.g., respiration, grazing, etc.) of key zooplankton species by conducting incubation experiments.
  • Participate in the regular tasks (e.g., plankton sampling, sample preservation, etc.) of the mesocosm experiment.

Requirements

  • Experience in laboratory work
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Familiarity with statical analysis will be desirable
